The utilization of patents means that:
- the owner of the patent uses it for his own products or
- the owner of the patent has others use it (patent licensing)

Conceivable reasons for patents unused are:

1. Patented technology is out of date for application to current products,
2. The owner of the patent does not run the business relating to the patent or went out of such business,
3. It is unknown who is using the patent (what kind of business entities use or have interest in the patent)
